The Chagrin Falls Film Photography class went on their highly anticipated final exam field trip during the month of May. Students were able to explore the Ohio State Reformatory (Mansfield Reformatory) and the Kingswood garden during the picture perfect sunny day. The first stop of the day was to the Ohio State Reformatory where the film Shawshank Redemption was filmed in 1994. The Reformatory was built between 1886-1910 and was in operation until 1990. The prison is home to the largest free standing steel cell block, the East Cell block, in the world at six tiers tall. Additionally, 200 people died at the reformatory including 2 guards during escape attempts. Students were able to see normally blocked off areas of the prison like solitary confinement while still having free rein of the place. Students toured the hospital, library, chapel, cell blocks, and living quarters for those who worked at the prison. The second stop of the day was to the Kingwood Gardens. The estate was built in 1926 by Mr. Charles Kelley King, the President and Chairman of the Board of Ohio Brass. In 1953, it opened as a public garden after Mr. King’s death. The gardens span 47 acres with a variety of flowers and cactuses along with multiple fountains and ponds. Peacocks and ducks also roam the grounds freely. Students were able to get up close to plants in the gardens and greenhouse making for good shallow depth photos and patterned photos.
